The Vaccination
The earthworms are white with water retention
after a heavy rain. Littered like Band-Aids
over the sidewalk on the day every kid
in town got the flu shot, it will be a while
before they flake off and wash away.
Even then I’ll remember how the nurse
gripped her arm, clamped it down
and cheerily exclaimed, You’re done!
